Pushing the cello envelope

  1. Went with TH, if you want a real review ask him.
  2. He's a really nice guy, BTW.
  3. The opening act got the most applause at the end of their last song.
  4. They weren't kidding when they told me, "wear earplugs".
  5. In fact, it was the loudest concert I've been to since seeing The Who in Portland, Oregon in 1976 or 1977 or so. Even louder, I think.
  6. Seriously, loudest cellos you're ever going to hear, pal. And the bass drum felt like a fricking heart massage. Fine place to have a heart attack, you wouldn't know until the music stopped. A big acoustic pacemaker.
  7. Perttu can play his cello behind his head.
  8. And I now understand how he could break a bow.
  9. I kept thinking, "no wonder they sound so fucking hot, they use double bass rosin."
  10. And also, "needs more Led Zeppelin."

And for a CD recommendation: The classic of course is their first CD: "Apocalyptica play Metallica on four cellos". The first one with mainly their own music is "Cult". I still don't recommend the newest one "Apocalyptica", but it's supposed to be more accessible for non-fans.

I liked the first one, Metallica on four cellos, but after hearing Cult, with drums added, and the newest one, Apocalyptica, with drums and vocals etc., when I go back to the first one it sounds a lot less exciting. As TH says, it depends what you like.
